Walhalla
7 Minute exposure. image is overexposed, I miscalculated the time and was exposing for the shadows in order to add more depth between the contrast and the highlights. In theory I should have exposed for the highlights. This would have given me a more balanced image..
This week, I was gifted a lens for my Nikon FA, which meant I could finally load my first roll of film. I left my Nikon Z6ii at home and set off alone, heading to one of my favourite places Walhalla.
It felt strange at first, almost like I’d left a part of myself behind. The digital camera is usually my safety net, and without it, I felt exposed but also free. but mostly filled with anxiety wondering if this would be a waste of time because I cannot control the situation. By using film and my Pinhole camera I am again removing the control.
The past few weeks have been full on, so this solo drive felt like a breath of air. It’s about an hour and a half from home to Walhalla, and the drive gave me space to just be. Still, my mind was racing because of course, it was Tuesday, the day before class, and I was doing this last minute… again. It’s a pattern I know well. There’s always this internal tug-of-war between what calms me and what stresses me. Anxiety shows up like an old friend I didn’t invite but in moments like this, I’m learning to let it sit quietly in the passenger seat while I keep moving forward. After all this is part of the process of this photography experiment.
Another 7 minute exposure, This image is slightly better that the one before, however you can see some movement in the tree and it was again overexposed a little. It is worth noting that I didn’t develop these images on the spot, I took them home to develop, so I had no idea if they actually worked. I will admit that after a little while I got into a grove and I was really enjoying the peace and quiet. I had no control over the situation other than using my phone to help calculate the exposure.
I was taking the same image using film and was hopeful to compare the two images once the film was developed..
